It depends on the maturity of the child, and the constraints of the home. I had my first boyfriend at 16.
Be clear with the boundaries and make sure that you are up front with your expectations from the child and that determines alot. Set an amount of time that they can spend together, and forewarn him/her that if her new romance affects scholarly performance, it will be no longer a luxury. Make it clear that this is a new responsibilty and that it is a privilege...

Boyfriends versus dating are two totally different scenarios.
My kids are all younger...9,8,7, and 5. All of them brag about little crushes (except my oldest...she still loathes boys thank goodness!) so I see no harm in that.
Dating...I think double or couple dating with parental drop off or involvement, is fine at 12 or 13...the little birds need to start flapping their wings and need some room and freedom to start experiencing these kind of adventures. I think parents who try to restrict their child from dating in a group or controlled setting at these ages begin to inadvertently repel their child from sharing truthful, normal feelings...such as being attracted to a person of the opposite sex.
On the other hand, a parents job is never done, so I would not let me child go on a "real" date until he or she was at least 14 or 15.

what a lot of parents dont get is that when kids have bf's or gf's under the age of 16, the boy and girl pretty much just act like friends. Its not a big deal...trust me. I know kids that have bf's at 10 years old. anywhere from 12 and up, they normally just hold hands. 13 and up MIGHT peck kiss. most of the time dont but it could be a possibility,, especially at school dances or events. Id say let them at 12-14,,,,,,but if you choose 14 they will probably just go out with someone anyways and when you tell them to brake up with there bf or gf they will hate you for a long period of time. Maturity is also a factor. choose and be careful becasue sometimes you have to let your kids choose this one.

It depends on the kid. I had my first boyfriend when I was twelve because my parents were cool with anything I did and didn't want to constrict me, so I got a boyfriend to see how far I could push them. It was actually really cute. We held hands and kissed each other on the cheek. We're still good friends. Middle school age kids want what they can't have, so don't be to uptight, but still set boundaries.

I say around my age, which is 15, soon to be 16. I just think that anything younger than that is just too young. But you do have to be responsible and mature enough to handle a relationship, so ultimatly, in the end, its the parents decision.

I would say 16-17 would be a good age to start. At the youngest 15, but personally my mother doesn't want me dating until I graduate and enter college.
