Green was not "down" when the hit occured. if he was already down and the hit came next, that player who made the hit would have been fined or suspended, but unfortunately, it was legit

I can't tell you because I don't know.
There should have been a PERSONAL FOUL called at the very least. And to be quite honest, the defensive player in question should have been ejected from the game for an UNNECESSARY ROUGHNESS call as well.
Terrible, terrible non-call.
Hopefully the NFL will step in and make a ruling on this!
I just hope Trent Green is OK. He's a good quarterback and seems like a good guy. It would suck if his career is over because of this cheap shot of a hit!

Pretty simple...
The player who made contact with Trent Green was in the process of making the tackle before Trent went into a slide...it is a call that is up to the discretion of the ref's and while the outcome was bad, it was a legite, legal hit. Even if it were a question of how he was hit, it was shoulder to chest...
Football is a brutal game and there are 300 pound men that can run the 40 in under 4.5....that is scary....These guys are bigger, stronger and faster than ever and unfortunatley there will be injuries.

Blah! I need to find another QB for my fantasy team now...I'm probably gonna have to pick up Chad Pennington :| Good think Green wasn't my starter.
I didn't see the game but they showed the hit a few times on ESPN...that was a little late, once a QB slides, the play is over, can't hammer him like that...Those must have been the refs from the Super Bowl working in Cincinati's way in that one...thats my guess....they called a penalty on the Chargers for "running into the kicker" when he didn't even touch him. The guy slid to the ground by the kickers feet...the kicker stood there for like 2 seconds and then jumped backwards like he was tripped to draw the penalty...that was bull too...Or the Packer game...Favre threw deep to Ferguson...he was going to catch it...the bear hit him while the ball was still on the way down and didn't get a flag for that either...pathetic job by these refs already.

Absolute no reason why a flag was not thrown.
The league has to protect quarterbacks and he was already down when he slid so not even a touch was necessary.
The play is being reviewed by the commisioner's office for possible fine and/or suspension of that defensive player. A little late and not excusable for the officials of that game. There should also be some discipline of the officials, like firing the team of them for their ineptness. Were these officials the same ones that handled the Super Bowl?

Geathers was already going down for the hit before he could even see Trent Green going down to his knee. At least that's what I saw from the clips.
That or the refs are going to be even worse than they were last year.

I didn't see it live, so can't give a good answer. From the replay they showed recently though I saw no push. Maybe they just didn't show that, which woudn't surprise me. Even if he lead with the shoulder Green was clearly in the slide before the hit, which would make it a late hit.

The tackle was initiated before Green went into the slide. You can't penalize a player for that. It just happened to be a really bad outcome. If he initiated the tackle after the slide, of course there should have been a penalty.

It was a legal tackle.
Football is about hitting and being hit. Hard. That's why it's exciting and fun to watch (unlike some pansy sports).
Green, and every man that walks on that field, knows how to hit and be hit and understands the risks.
You people who are whining are trying to turn a man's sport into a wimp sport and I despise all of you for it!!!

It was a good hit. The quarterback leaves them self vulnerable when they start to slide like that. The defender can't let up. He doesn't know what the quarterback's intentions are. I say be a man, take the hit. I love it when whoosy quarterbacks gt hurt. They need to learn to lower their shoulder for a couple extra yards instead of sliding,
