If you take Karate, you'll probably get into the best shape in your life. Kicking uses almost every muscle in your body especially your abs. Your hand/eye coordination will improve and your confidence levels will soar.

If you are looking to lose weight and strength. I would go with Boxing, Kickboxing although some Karate places (and some Jeet Kun Do) offer this as well. Check out the schools in your area. Attend a class or too and make a good judgement based on what you see and an interview or two with the instructor.

Quite frankly, any kind of physical activity that involves cardio exercises incorporated with strength, flexibility, and coordination training is good for you.
To answer your questions, they're all good, but at the beginning, you're probably just going to be standing around a lot, and the effectiveness of your body as a martial art instrument will be very limited, and only after about 3 months will you start to be able to perform better and engage the activity more fully with your whole body. So in short, it'll be good for you to lose weight and get stronger with, but it'll take a while.

Go for it....just check it out at one of your local karate schools. Don't listen to others...it's you who is interested- not them. I have two friends who are into martial arts. I can definitely say that if it's the right sport for you - it will help you be more confident in yourself....you will be more agile and stronger...and depending on how often you train and amount of food intake- you will lose weight. Don't just think about joining one...because the older you get, the less courage you will have to start doing anything like that....so, check it out for yourself today!

Give it a try and see if you like it. I know it's really good for building flexibility and since there is a lot of movement you might burn enough calories to lose weight. My daughter takes karate and she loves it, and her instructor seems to be in excellent shape so it isn't hurting him any. I say go for it.

Ordinary regimens will do that. Karate is combat. Frenzied, combat. Smith and Wesson is way lots more efficient. Besides, these days they come at you in a crowd so I don't think I'm too far off the mark.
