I found abuse going on with a puppy in a store, called Pet Land. A dog was eating his own poop. I wanted to take a picture and report it to the police, but last time i was going to take a picture in a store, they told me i could get fined for it. Do any of you know if its illegal or not to take pictures?

not sure about the fine, but I'm sure store owners don't want people taking pix's in their stores (trade secrets, possible violations) etc....

It is not legal if the store personnel make this clear to you, either in posted signs or if they ask you not to. If you are clever, you can probably get one or two shot in before they ask you to cease, then do so pleasantly and promptly.

Puppies eat their own poop even when they have other options and are not being abused. If this is the only thing wrong, you probably can't get anyone in authority to take action. Maybe the photos will show more.

When I was redecorating my house, I took the camera to take shots of the furniture, to aid in my decision of what to buy. 90% of them did not mind, some did, so I just thanked them, and quickly put the camera away and did not take any more. Nor did I buy anything from their store, but did not get in any real trouble for it.

No, you can't get fined for it.

However, keep in mind that a dog eating his own poop is hardly abuse. Gross yes, abuse no. If you've ever had a dog, you'd know that.

Don't go around causing trouble with local businesses unless you have genuine cause. That store is just trying to make a profit, and there's no law against that.

There isn't likely any law which prevents you from photographing inside a store, but many stores simply don't allow it. They could certainly ask you to leave, and if you refuse could charge you with trespassing.

I'd guess the store which said you could be fined for photographing inside a store was bluffing, and likely their bluff worked exactly as they planned!

To know for certain, contact your local clerk of courts or prosecutor.

If your intentions are to market trade secrets or to duplicate products, corporate procedures, or something along those lines, you run the risk of being sued by corporate firms that specialize in such cases. I am not sure there are laws in place to assess fines for taking pictures of random items however if the intent is purely personal.

The only reason that one store threatened you with a fine is because they wanted to stop you from exposing their dirty little secret. There's no reason you can't take pictures in a store. If they threaten you with a fine tell them to go ahead, you'll be happy to see them in court.

In some stores yes, and that's what a lot of dogs do they aren't treating the dogs badly. My puppy would eat her own vomit if I let her.

II pulled out my camera out (at a mall near DC) because i thought it was pretty and make a great background for my bf. The security guard approached me right after I snapped the first one and told me I wasn't allowed to take any photos. I thought he was joking so I took another one. I almost got my camera taken from me.

Send someone in who acts dumb and is like "OMG look at this cute little puppy!" *snap picture* They aren't going to care about that. Make them pretend they need to show pics to their bf or something to decide which one they want. That's what a friend of mine did at a puppy farm here. GOOD LUCK and make sure they get reported!
