I want to burn quality movie dvds and some data dvds (mainly as backups). This will be an internal drive in an emachine desktop.

Do I want DVD +/- RW , or just a DVD + R or DVD - R

is it best to get the first one so it is more universal and can both read and write to all media?

What about speeds? I've been looking at 4x, 8 x, or 16 x

What brand do you prefer? Sony, Lite-On, NEC, Pioneer, etc.

What about software? Nero is usually the standard.

If you are buying a brand new one it will be 16x dual layer and do all formats. Yes you want Nero. Don't worry about brand. I have 5 different brands here at home and never had a problem.

get a DVD =\- rw A dual layer dvd re writer

because if you mess up a DVD you can format the disk and start again

you should get a x16 speed as that should be future proof

i have a Sony i got it from a friend it is about a year old it works brilliant and i have never had any problems with it

Nero is fine i pretty much use it for everything
make sure that it is included with the DVD re writer
usually you also get some blank DVDs to use with the re writer

hey i hope this info helps you

ps try using DVD shrink for your movies and Nero for your data

You need a DVD +/- RW
It is not exactly best to get the brand new one. Try a different model that is not as new but make it new.
16x
Sony
Definetely Nero.

The best is a DVD±R±RW DL

So you can burn the 3 formats DVD-R-RW, DVD+R+RW and DL dual layer 8.5 GB also known as DL9 o DVD9, 16x would be the best choice.
