I'm hearing two different stories and I'm not sure exactly which source I should turn to to find out and I would like to have plenty of time to get one incase I need it.

As far as I know, you need to have a passport to travel anywhere outside the United States. You get your application from the Post Office and it takes 4-6 weeks to get. When I sent for mine, I think it was about $90.00. That was a few years ago. The postal clerk can tell you everything you need to do. If you happen to live in the DC area you can get one done in person and very quickly!

as long as return before Dec. 31, 2006, you will not be required to have a passport - US citizens can use a government issued photo ID and birth certificate in lieu of a passport until then - after 12/31 all US citizens will need a passport - THERE IS PLENTY OF TIME TO GET A PASSPORT, WHY NOT DO IT NOW?

I would get one. It's not required yet, but I am a Canadian and have a passport - my friends do not..When we travelled together last year to DR I went through customs a lot faster than they did.

in 2007 you need one. if you do not have one you need a birth certificate with the seal on it. drivers license. if you are a woman who is married you need marriage certificate with the seal on it. we went in January 2006 with this way did not have any problems. just lot of papers to hold on to.

I would get one, do it now while you have lots of time. Most people get them closer to winter.
