I play violin, and I have played viola and cello. Always wanted to learn to play bass, but never got around to it.
When I first started playing violin I always thought that once you chose one of the instruments, that was where you would stay. Turns out that switching instruments (or playing more than one) is a lot more common than most folks think.
Lawrence Dutton was an acquaintance growing up. Probably the best violinist I knew among my peers. I knew him to fill in on viola when necessary, but to my mind he was the consumate violinist who would probably make his living in the first violin section of a major orchestra. Larry is now the violist for he Emerson String Quartet.
On the other hand we have Mark Wood. Mark grew up playing the viola ... toured the Northeast in a string quartet with his brothers playing Beethoven. Mark went to Juilliard to study viola, and got mad at his teacher who would not teach him to play his viola like Jimi Hendrix. Mark left Juilliard, left the viola behind and picked up the violin. He now bills himself as the "first heavy metal violinist." You've probably heard his music as he is a founding member of the Trans Siberian Orchestra. Mark plays a 7-string fretted electric violin that he developed called the Viper. He has also developed a really cool electric cello. You can check Mark and the Viper out at http://violinstudent.com/biographies/mark1.html. Links there to his music production company and to his electric violin company. If nothing else you've got to see the video and hear him play the Viper. Just blows me away!
Right now I'm considering buying a 5-string violin so that I can get those deeper tones that I love in the viola, and I keep threatening to pick up the mandolin because they're tuned EADG, just the same as the violin!

No, but I'd love to play the cello. It's one of my favorite instruments.
