I also know for a fact that olive oil is the choice. Many opera singers and pop use this method. It coats the throat instead of just wetting like water.And if I might add, it's pretty healthy for you.

Drink warm fluids of course, but what I have found is that the room temperature is really a big factor, too hot or too really irritates my throat. So regardless if I have something to drink, if the room temperature is bad, particularly too hot, you can forget it.
