Port Arthur ( http://www.portarthur.net/ ) has no beach so to speak. Sabine Pass is the closest to the Gulf but has no places on the beach. Sabine Lake is the outlet for the Neches and Sabine rivers, which empties into the Gulf of Mexico. From PA you take SH 73 to Winnie. Turn South on Hwy. 124 until it runs out at SH 87.That's the Gulf of Mexico in front of you. If you go East or left, the hwy. is in bad shape and you should have 4WD to go that way. Turn right or West and continue on to Bolivar Peninsula. Take the ferry across Galveston Bay and there you will find a Hotel on the Beach. That would be a better destination for a family. Interstate 10 runs East and West from Houston to Orange. Cross the Sabine river and you're in Louisiana. The food is great just about anywhere along the Gulf Coast. Tex Mex, seafood, Oriental, BBQ you name it. Most people are friendly but watch for the no driving idiots, plenty of them. Good luck and enjoy.

I would avoid the Golden Triangle (Beaumont, Port Arthur and Orange). It is kinda industrial. I would head down to Crystal Beach or Galveston, more tourist-y and lots more to do. Also, Port Arthur isn't on the beach.

Take I-10 west to 124, go south until you hit 87, and go to the west. Take that through the penninsula until you hit the ferry. Once you go over the ferry, you are in Galveston.

Why in the world would you want to take your family to Port Arthur? Do you hate them?
