His girlfriend put diesel fuel in his nice new car and he has no money to take it into the shop. He gets it going , drives it a bit , then it stalls and he has a majorly hard time to start it again. How can he fix this problem..exactly what does he need to do.

HOW did she do that? The filler nozzle for diesel won't fit in the gasoline filler.
Get as much of the fuel out as possible. Drain it or siphon it, or pump it, or remove the tank and pour it out.
Add a FULL tank of gasoline (Regular unleaded, premium doesn't help here) to dilute what is left.
He can purge the rest of the system by opening the fuel line at the engine, and cycling the key 8 or 10 times to remove what is still in the fuel filter and fuel lines. Be careful to catch the fuel in a rag or container and not spill it on the engine. When the engine starts, it will get hot, and you don't want to burn the little car down.

Good Luck

How much gas was there in the car before the diesel was put in? In other-words what is the approximate ratio between the two?

In a pinch, I have run diesel mixed with gas when gas was not available. Like when out on road someplace, and it is miles and miles to the next station, and you don't have much left, (and you happen to be carrying diesel for anther vehicle)! Also have done vise-versa with gas in diesel.

Too much gas in diesel will be very hard on the engine, but too much diesel won't hurt the engine itself, - even though it might not run ! By the way, a hot engine burns the mix better than a cold engine!

Back to your problem,- if the tank is not clear full, - the more gas you mix with the diesel, the better the car will run, - but it will smoke a whole bunch! Even with the "shield" (flap) in the filler neck, it is usually possible to get a quarter inch fuel hose into the tank and remove some (via siphoning)- You will need about 6 feet ot it. YOU may have to use a long bladed screwdrive to hold the "flap" down to remove hose, as pulling the hose out will tend to pull the flap tighter! Drain out as much as you can, then fill the tank with gas, it may still smoke mildly, but if you burn about half a tank, & fill again, - the mix will get even thinner, and it will smoke less!

If you are not willing to throw the "mixed stuff" away, you can slip in about a gallon with every other tank full, - this will make sure that you don't get mix too much again!

first of all this will not hurt the catalytic converter or oxygen sensor dont know where some of these people get there info some of them are mechanics but what you need to do is drain the gas tank you will need to either pump it out or take the tank off refill it with gas like ironhand said high octane dont matter here then unhook gas line from the injector rail and flush the system by turning key several times change the fuel filter and the spark plugs it will crank awhile before it starts and after it starts it will smoke a bit for awhile just let it run until the smoke quits and you may need to change plugs again and you will be ok

Stop, go no further, get the fuel drained and the oil changed by a mechanic immediately. Catalytic converter damage imminent. It will most likely not harm the fuel system or engine although it's not designed for diesel fuel but the excess hydrocarbon being pumped into the catalytic converter by the engine missifing from trying to run on diesel will damage it.

Remove as much of the old fuel as possible fill the gas tank with premium gas (diesel has very low octane) and replace the fuel filter. The diesel may damage the fuel injectors catalytic converter and oxygen sensors if driven any further if that's the case it is going to get expensive to fix.

First off, he needs to empty the tank and fill it with fresh high octane gas. Diesel is very low octane and the high octane will balance it out.

Then disconnect the gas line at the intakes and flush the line for a few seconds. Then reconnect and after a few seconds, it should be back to normal.

To drain the tank, you can pump it out . Some tanks have a drain valve but not all do. Another way is to remove the fuel line at the tank and let it drain out into a pan.

Drop the fuel tank and dump the fuel out of it. Flush the fuel line and then put the tank back in place and fill it with gasoline. It may not run real good at first but as the gasoline gets to the carb or injectors then it should be ok. Oh yeah and don't forget the fuel filter, get a new one.

Good luck

He really screwed up by driving the car. The gas tank could have been easily drained but now the problem is all over his fuel system. He will definitely need a mechanic now to inspect the complete fuel system as well as his combustion chamber and catalytic converter.

tell him to drop the tank and clean it out and change the gas filter and put in some fresh gas.it will run bad for a while till the diesel fuel gets out and the new gas gets in the motor.

Empty tank, drain fuel line, replace fuel filter.
siphen gas out, unhook fuel line at top of motor, turn on key to ingage system so it will squirt out and change fuel filter.
Now this all depends on what kinda car he has (which was not mentioned) which really determines the exact way how to drain fuel lines.Good luck
