I do know the answer to this.

Back in the 1800s when cannons were still used in wars the English coast had a line of them pointing out to sea towards France.

One winter the main gunner who was on night watch had a bit to much to drink and forgot to top up the cannons powered camber.

That night the Sergent turn up for a surprise inspection.
Of course when the gunner tried to fire the cannons their did not fire just a little puff of smoke.

He become know to this mates as a gooner and not a gunner.

Because gooners always fire blanks.

Hope this answers your question.

There are actualy called the gunners due to the fact an arsenal is a mass amount of weapons or a storage place for weapons same thing. Some smart alec obviously found it hillairious to call them the gooners(a play on words). how grown up can such a person be?

The word Gooners comes from Gunners. The actual nickname for the club is Gunners but the fans changed it to Gooners. On thier club badge it shows a picture of a cannon gun hense the reason for Gunners. A gunnerary is used for riffles and bigger guns to be stored in.

Arsenal was formed by people that worked in a gun factory and Arsenal is another name for ammunition so that's why we've always been nicknamed the gunners. And that's why we call ourselves gooners

Arsenal were founded as Dial Square in 1886 by a group of workers employed by the Dial Square workshop at the Royal Arsenal, an armaments factory in Woolwich, south east London.

Gooners is a play on the traditional nickname Gunners.

An Arsenal is where you keep weapons, hence the name 'Gunners.'

Gooners are people who pull stupid faces.

Both support Arsenal.

They were originally called 'Woolwich Arsenal', where there's an army barracks, and armaments are stored. Hence the cannon logo on the shirts. They moved to north London (in the 1920s I think)
