A variable is just that - it varies. High temperature on a given day. Number of people attending a football game. Number of pages in a book. All these vary - you never know what will come up.

Dependent variable - it also varies, but something else controls it. The area of a rectangle is length times width. That area may be anything - but it is dependent on the length and width. Change either one of those, and the area changes. The area is a variable that is dependent on the width (or length) of the rectangle.

Independent variable - varies also, but nothing effects it - although it may effect a dependent variable. Same example as above - the length is an independent variable.

Calibration - More than one possible meaning here. I will assume the calibration you are talking about is the standardization of a measuring device. It's important beacuse your measuring device gives you the values of your varibles. If the gauge you use is wrong, all your data are wrong.

Callibration is very important, it's like counting drips and one drip more or less may be very important and have fatal consequences for a man. A variable is like all people being nearly the same, except for some variations. A dependent is like a child that still has to depend on its parents to stay alive and an independent variable is like grown people being free but also responsble for their own deeds.

You must be in a hurry. If you look in your text index and/or Glossary, then read the chapter on lab techniques you will have the answers the teacher is looking for. Some texts will give the answers to the odd problems, of course my teacher assigned the even problems.

A variable is a symbol (usually a letter) that represents some value (i.e. x is the speed of a train). a dependent variable is one that depends on the value of another variable (i.e. y=2x, y is a dependent). It is usually the value you are trying to obtain. of another variable (i.e. y=2x, x is indepenent). It is usually the value you ae measuring. measuring istrument can accurately measure (i.e. a ruler is accurate to a 1/8th of an inch). It is important because if your measurement or the value you need to get has to be accurate to a certain degree, you need your insrtuments to be at least that accurate.
