Depends on the league, but it most, it means that you're suspended (without pay) until the commissioner decides you can come back. Usually used for incidents without precedent (although even then, sometimes a length of time is set, like in NBA commish David Stern's suspensions for the Ron Artest/Auburn Hills incident).
When Orlando Brown shoved a ref in the NFL for hitting him with a penalty flag, the "indefinite suspension" ended up being two weeks. Sometimes, it's just a placeholder until the league decides what it wants to do with the player.

RE:
What does it really mean to be suspended indefinitely in pro sports?
You always hear about athletes being suspended indefinitely. Does this mean they just don't know how long you are being suspended? You hear about season suspensions, suspensions for X number of games, and even life long bans from the sport. What does it mean to be suspended indefinitely?

I never heard about suspended indefinitely in the NFL, only in College. That means that they aren't sure how long the player will be suspended. It could be an academic thing where the guy has to get back to eligible. The other thing is cases like one of the more recent one with Texas, where players were arrested. Well the coach was giving them benefit of the doubt so he didn't release them, BUT he suspended them until the charges were dropped. So could be any number of things, but in general it means the player is suspended until further notice and that could mean forever.
