If you have a college class that requires you to do a lot of speaking and it's not speech. Do you drop or go through with it? I have a Anthropology class where we have several presentations in front of the class. I am going to guess that a lot of people will drop.

I have, and I know alot of people who have dropped classes like that but the truth is that you have to do it sooner or later and it's better to just do it. You shouldn't put your life on hold because you don't want to talk in front of people. I put it off forever and when I finally did it, I liked it.

Why drop out, the more you public speak the more you get use to it. And if you can't do it in a classroom full of your piers then how can you do it in your career choice. Think about it this way if your job required you to do a meeting or do a presentation would you quit that job just because of it. Of course not, so why would you quit a class because of the same reason. Take it as a learning experience. You can never learn too much and the experience will be a great way to practice public speaking. Good luck and never give up.

No.

You deal with your fear of public speaking. Using your presentations to give you experience in front of an audience will help you no matter what type of work you may end up doing in life.

People sometimes need to make presentations on their jobs or need to make a presentation as part of a group they belong to. Some job interviews become more like a presentation.

In college, you can get the experience doing a presentation before you need to do one where your job is on the line. College students may be more tolerant of your hestiations or mistakes in the presentation. You may even find you like giving presentations once you give one. Giving a presentation can be fun.

Also, if you don't pass the class the first time, you can always take it again.

Don't give up so easily.

No matter what your major, a public speaking class should be taken as soon as possible. Once the fear of speaking in public is over, you will be greatly relieved. I couldn't face an audience until I took public speaking. The instructor said that he would be the worst audience that a person could have. He threw erasers past people's heads, he booed and hissed, he called me a lick lipper and brought me a glass of water. After this class, I was never afraid to make a speech again. He was horrible but he guaranteed that you would be safe in his class and if you stuck with it you would not get a bad grade and he guaranteed that you would never be afraid of a crowd. It worked with me.

I've never had a problem with it. I suggest you stay in the class. Anthropology may not help you much after college -- but learning to speak in front of a group sure will.

Search the net for aids on how to prepare a talk. If you can use Powerpoint -- use it, but keep the slides to a minimum, don't use many bullet points & use them as talking points. The worst thing in the world is to have them read along.

There are three phases to the talk. First -- tell them what you are oging to tell them. Second -- tell them what you are telling them. Third, tell them what you told them. It sounds stupid -- but it isn't. Part one: Interduction -- I will tell you X -- short and sweet. Part two -- tell them in more detail. Part three: Executive summary -- hit the high points.

Good luck.

I know what you mean. I hate public speaking, too. It's my number one fear... it even comes before my fear of spiders (wow, I know).

If you need that class for your major, then take it, because without it then you won't be able to be what you want to be... and that would be just crap. So take the course and get it over with is the best solution.

Go through it. It isn't that hard. Everyone else in the class isn't going that excited and most of them will be pretty crappy just from experience. So you might as well stick with it if you need the classes.
