If I don't have a good co-pilot, I make it a point to study the map before I set out. I memorize major routes and what turn-offs I should be taking, whether I turn right or left is important too.

Google Maps is great for getting a close-up view of the streets and routes.
If you are on an 8 lane expressway, you better know what turnoffs are coming ahead. It is a matter of safety for yourself to know that information.
If you miss a turnoff, I keep going until the next exit and double back. Sometimes in heavy traffic there is no other way if you are not in the right lane it is safer to keep going than to cut across lanes.
