Why is my professor making me read this in a poli sci class?

Because you may be a smart guy and he's probably trying to screw you in the mind. Remember that the control excercised by even Odysseus over his men was almost ceremonial. His only plus being that he was indeed cunning. If his men chose spoil over obeying his orders, then his orders automatically became non existent. All so called military and political excercise in antiquity was based on simple rapine. That is what made Arthur and the Knights such a shockingly different trend:

" Might does not make right. "

Personally I see a parallel between the Trojan War and The Iraqi war. The retionale (That Trojan prince Paris stole my wife) versus the real reason (Let's all get together and sack Troy for all the wealth therein.)

It is all about getting involved in foreign affairs. Make you think about staying home and minding your own business, rather then butting into other countries problems.
