Consumer Price Index. It's a measure of inflation.

It's based on prices of food, clothing, shelter, and fuels, transportation fares, charges for doctors' and dentists' services, drugs, and other goods and services that people buy for day-to-day living.

The CPI for July 2006 was 203.5. The reference base is 1982-84 = 100. In other words, on average something that cost $1 in 1982-84 would cost $2.03 cents now.
