I have a 2000 5.9L and my mod list is quite large. I was getting 11.9 mi/gal. Once I put a catback system (flowmaster 40 series) on it, i got it up to 12.5 mi/gal. Also, try to get some real good spark plugs, wires and distributer cap. My durango went up to 13.2 after that.

LOL, ok I know thats not funny. The Dodge 5.9 has never gotten good fuel economy. K&N air filter, flow master exhaust will help, but maybe 2 to 3 miles per gallon. The best thing I found is make sure the air filter is clean, you use a good grade of fuel, and you have the proper air pressure in your tires..oh yeah and slow down....I have found that most vehicles get better fuel mileage if the RPM's at highway speeds are run at 1900 RPMs or less.
My Durango would run around 2100 to 2300 RPMS at 70 MPH----so slow down......and Good Luck.

You can get more performance, or better economy, but you are going to be hard put to get both.
Probably the best thing you can do, that will be the most bang for your buck is to do a "tuner" computer programming. You can get them (Hypertech, Super Chips) pretty much anywhere on line or at speed shops. They run ~ $450.00 and are legal in all states. SOME other additions are not.
Chemicals won't help all that much.

between the best appearing after marketplace air filters, the ok&N clear out business enterprise has been around with the aid of fact the 60's. they're probable the perfect around otherwise they does not have lasted for see you later. you could anticipate to work out a small distinction in gasoline mileage with the aid of layout of the air clear out for particular automobiles. HP will clearly strengthen fairly with the aid of fact your engine will breathe extra truthfully and ingest extra air and with extra HP comes extra torque. you're purely speaking a average HP strengthen and torque strengthen with the aid of extra appropriate airflow. those are the two reward, yet like maximum products of this form, your're unlikely to income sufficient HP and torque which will "pin you to the seat"! the upward push in gasoline mileage would be your perfect benefit. ok&N warranties their air filters for a million miles! you could wash it out and use it lower back and lower back. in case you ever have a difficulty consisting of your ok&N air clear out, they are going to replace it loose, no questions asked. there's a reason maximum racing engines have the air they breathe filtered with the help of a ok&N air clear out! They paintings! It won't get you one extra 10 extra HP and a hundred extra foot kilos of torque basically with the help of fixing your cutting-edge air clear out with a ok&N clear out, in spite of the fact that it rather is going to furnish sparkling valuable air circulate on your engine and a few extra appropriate gasoline mileage!
