Back in the thirties, in the US, mostly trains and some trucks...and also still animal traction vehicles, in Europe (and other continents) many places still used mainly animal traction, although the trains were moving up to first place to replace the horses, mules and donkeys! The pace of change became accelerated after WWII.

Horse and cart, petrol vehicles and the occasional steam lorries, they were wonderful things.
