anything smaller than what can be seen at 2000 times magnification. Any greater magnification does not give more clear resolution of the object. (it's called empty magnification) It has to do with the item being smaller than half the wavelength of the light. Electrons have a much shorter wavelength therefore items can be resolved to 500,000 times magnification. (which is used by an electron microscope.)
A recent discovery may change the resolution limit of light microscopes. That discovery is of materials that have negative refractive indexes. (thought to bee impossible 10 years ago.
