These 2 friends of mine birthdays are coming up, one i have known for over 6 years (S) and the other only one year (J)

S always seems to buy me cheap meaningless gifts, and J spends a reasonable amount on me. Problem is, both of their birthdays are pretty much at the same time, one after the other....now if i buy J an expensive gift and S a cheap one, she'd feel ripped off and betrayed because we spent more on someone we hardly know and less on her - what shall i do?

I dont want to spend too much on S because she hardly spends any on me, but then i keep thinking she would compare her (cheaper) gift to the gift i gave J....

Any ideas what the right thing to do is?

wow i think i get it, thats complecated lol! im gona call them sally and jade(jade is my name YAY). well you could make like a scrap book or something like that 4 sally, cause u mite have quite alot of photos! but if SHE gets YOU meaningless gifts, then u could do something else. For jade, the best name in da world (jokeing), you could give her a photo frame with a picture in it of u n her or something, OR jut get her a nice little prezzie! the scrap book is cheap BUT meaningful! if she feels ripped off by dat, shes not a very nice person!

S appears to be happy with cheap and meaningless so I'd go with that. Don't assume that J actually spends more in order to get you a better pressie though, there are all sorts of ways to source nice stuff. My sister gives me nice things but most were pressies ie given to her that she didnt want, and I can often find really nice bits on ebay or occasionally in certain charity shops. You can use either of these excuses with S if you need to defuse a situation.
Maybe J has more time to find that special something.
I have sometimes found that an expensive gift does more harm than good to a budding friendship.

It is not the cost of the gift that counts its the idea and the feelings behind it. Some people do not even like receing gifts their just want to be appreciated. Its not worth ot to buy any expensive gift for anyone except if you have found out what exactly their want, a little bit of snopping around will help.

tricky one - the only way I see around this is to either bite the bullet and buy them a reasonable same priced gift - also who knows S might start buying you expensive gifts back - maybe she only buys you cheap ones coz you buy her cheap ones!
Or you can ask J not to tell S what you got her - but thats kinda sneaky and its not fair to ask J to like for you.
Alternatively just spend a little bit more on S and a little bit less on J and buy something for them both around the same price mark

Buy them the same item e.g. a necklace but spend more on one than the other, the other will never know

OR

don't worry about the money and get them both something they will love and put lots of thought into it.

Take them both out to dinner. It's the thought that counts, and both should appreciate the gesture. It won't be super expensive for you and there won't be any jealousy issues over who got the better gift.

this is difficult as you should not give to receive...why dont you buy them both a reasonably priced present that is of same value.. then maybe if you feel bad you could buy (J) something extra when you have some time on your own or just go to cinema as a treat or something...
