I think that public assistance is great as a temporary aid not a way of life. By allowing people to stay on welfare is not only a stain on our economic system but it keeps them from being accountable for their life choices.
It should be meant to get people on their feet not keep people off their feet.

Public assistance with nearly any type can be a good thing if used to get one back on ones feet. Developing a dependancy on it is a bad thing, as the dependant does not offer anything in return to the society that supports them. There should be a law of diminishing returns... the longer you remain on assistance, the lower your assistance becomes until ultimately you receive nothing at all. Exceptions could possibly exist for those with disabilities.
Currently, I personally feel it is being abused. I like the states that adopt programs where if you are drawing assistance, you have to perform a public service like picking up trash along a roadway. Most of those looking for a 'free ride' would cease to draw assistance rather than working for it!

I think too many people see public assistance as a way of life like this is how i will support my family. Public assistance should only be used to get back on your feet because sometimes things can go bad for people and they need a little help.

You ask about public assistance being out of control well what about SSI also? Public assistance is fine to get aid for a short time or for when you can't find a job that pays enough. What happens with SSI? People get on that and can get money also. Remember SSI comes from out social security and it is helping deplete the funds so that they won't be out there for us to get and to even get full benefits I will have to reach 70 years of age. People are getting their children on SSI for learning disorders physical and mental defects and many other things. Instead of the government reassing these people every so many years they continue to let them stay on it even the ones that become adults continue to get it without trying to even find a job. I have seen a lot of these and they spend that money on drugs and alcohol.

It's well within control. What's OUT of control are government pensions - they are going to bankrupt this country because we are NOT getting solutions from our government.
So instead of blaming people on public assistance for needing it - or, in some cases, for stealing and abusing it - try working on some solutions that will ensure that the truly needy get what they need.
Or you can continue with your "let them eat cake" philosophy, which is evident in your question.

Yes, I do think public assistance is out of control.
I think the US government should focus more on getting people off welfare and into the workforce.

yeah a lot of people take advantage of the system that working people have to pay for.. It cost a great deal of money to go to the doctor if your sick, but the people out there living off public assistance go for free...they need to make them people go get a job and support themselves and thier own kids..

while many people DO take advantage of the system, it is needed. what's sad is the way it's used. they need to rehaul the entire system, but i don't see that happening. with the cost of living in the US, many people need financial help. not everyone, like a single mom, can have two simultaneous jobs or whatever to make ends meet.
