To pay the bills, to buy food and clothes. These are essentials.
The extras are so so many: holiday, fancy car, bike, designer goodies, jewels, lottery tickets, presents.....

People work since they have to. The main reason is to earn money to pay for the basic needs and anything else that can be purchased by money.
Beyond this, people also work for other reasons, to help people, to contribute to society, to get a feeling of power, to be an identity, to have something to do, to have a place to go, to meet other people, to produce or create goods, or products, to serve others, to repair, grow, research, or teach others.
There are as many reasons as there are people who are working.
People may want to work, but can't due to disability, social problems, lack of training and education, economic conditions where they live, and people not hiring them for work.
I am among the unemployed, currently.

People work for money, something to do, fulfill a sense of purpose, contribute to society, feel good about themselves, be productive citizens, insurance or other benefits, schedule or routine, be a part of an organization or social aspects, learn a skill or trade, help others, get to know someone or something in particular, move up in society, etc....there are actually a lot of reasons people work!

Mainly, to earn money to pay for bills, groceries, and other necessities of life. For some, work is a way of life;they would get bored doing nothing at all.

Because there are millions of people on welfare depending on us! People work to make money. Nothing in life has ever been free, so we must do something to get something in return. We work to make the money that is in turn used to buy the things we want and need.
