They were written about by Don Marquis, who had a wonderfully wry sense of humor. Mehitibel was an alley cat with shall we say loose morals and little mother love. Her favorite expression was "toujours gai, I always say, there's a dance in the old dame yet". For that alone she will always be my heroine.

I think Archie was spelled "archy." The poems were always written in complete lower case, as archy (the roach) typed them by jumping from one key to another (this was back in the mists of antiquity, before computers and even before electric typewriters were fairly common!). Naturally, he couldn't hold down a shift key for capitalization.

If you enjoy the poetry of Don Marquis, check out another light versifier or two from his generation--I'd strongly recommend Ogden Nash and Phyllis McGinley.

As I recall Archie was a cockroach. I used to hear them in Oral Interp classes and that's when I read some myself. Very witty as I recall.
