HEY RED. It depends on how religious you are and what your sister 'expects' as a god-parent. These days, it can mean just to keep a watchful eye over the child's best interests, it can mean to watch over their spiritual growth or well-being, it can mean some financial role depending on if they child were at risk if the parents were to die, or it can simply mean a 'role' in that your sister just wants someone to fill the 'title'.
The BEST definition is to simply ask, "What does this entail, and what are you expecting from me as a God-Father if I accept this?"

It means that in the event something happens to the child's mother, you will be responsible for seeing that he continues his religious education. Not necessarily going to Catholic school, lol, but you'll see that he's raised Baptist (or whatever religion this lady is) and attends Sunday school or whatever that particular religion considers necessary for proper spiritual development.
It's sad, but many people today don't know the true role of a godparent. They either pick their best friend as their child's godparent because it's the "cool" thing to do or to honor them, in a way, or they're SORELY misinformed, and they believe that if they die, the godparent will take over custody/guardianship of their child. NEITHER of these are true. There's a HUGE difference between being a godparent and being a legal guardian. HUGE.

do not accept until you learn what it means.
YOu are responsible fo rthe baby should the parents pass. This is ofcourse not legally binding but I'm sure you get it. You are also responsible for guiding the child through life even as it grows and the parents are involved in the child's life.
Please research the baby's religion a little more also to get a more informative aspect on your responsibility as a god parent

Being a God Parent is a lifetime commitment. You are saying that you are committed to being an active part of this babies life forever. It is something to take very seriously and not just say yes because it's an honor. Look at your life now and where do you see yourself in the future. do you think your friend will be in your life in 20 years? Could you afford to take the child in if something were to happen to the babies parents.
I have known folks to turn it down as a favor to the kid. As parents, we should also be choosing the person who are capable of doing all and beyond that was mentioned above.

your friend's sister.. isn't that a bit far off? Unless you are friends with her too??
Being a god father is a serious committment. If you don't know what the responsibilities are, I'd recommend you kindly decline.

it really depends on the person...if they are active in the church it means that you should help the parent keep the child active in church....if it is just a nontraditional godparent....it is just something people do....if anything happened to the childs parents and there are no living family members..you would raise the child...but if there are living family members they would get the child before you anyways..it is really just a title!
