"Hadrian's Wall (Latin: Vallum Hadriani) was a stone and turf fortification built by the Roman Empire across the width of Great Britain to prevent military raids by the tribes of Scotland to the north, to improve economic stability and provide peaceful conditions in the Roman province of Britannia to the south, to define the frontier of the Empire physically, and to separate the unruly Selgovae tribe in the north from the Brigantes in the south and discourage them from uniting." I know this is a joke question but...

It was for neither really. It was more of a symbolic "marker" to show the end of the Roman Empire's extent in Briton - they did not want to take responsibility of anywhere further North of the border at that point, as they felt it would stretch their forces too thunly. However, there was a lot of Romanisation of the Pictish tribes, and a lot of trading with them? the idea of the marauding Scots is a much later, much more romanticised notion - many wanted the security protection and benefits of being part of the empire. Did you know that the Kilt was derived from the Roman toga? That's how much Rome affected Scotland - they adopted the same clothes, and kept them for years after the southern Britons had abandoned them.

So basically the romans did not want Scotland - it didn't offer enough resources to make the conquest economically viable - unlike the resource rich areas of what is now England and Wales.

PS/all modern Scottish people are descended from English and Irish, just like the English really. there is no difference between ththe people's really - any modern Scot is more likely to be related to Edward Longshanks than William Wallace. I'm as Scottish as most Scots. So get them chips off your shoulders.

Ther where no scots then, they where called picts, and were warfare lead and not settlers like the romans were that had settled in England. So Hadrian had a wall built with look-outs and garrison to keep an eye on the picts. It worked for a while, in fact up until the 5th century.

The wall was built by the Romans. As was Antonine's wall. Both walls were built to help the Romans hold their position that far north of the British Isles.

The Scots were not trying to invade England, and the English were not trying to invade Scotland.

The Romans had conquered most of England, and could not progress any further north due to the difficult terrain and people.

The Pict's who inhabited Scotland back then scared the crap out of the Romans so Hadrian built a wall to stop the Pict's raids into England and protect his dwindling number of troops most of whom had deserted because of the brutality they had to put up with plus they could not stand another winter up to there knees in snow

The Romans watched the slaves build a wall so that Marauders would be forced to steal sheep in a more confined area so they had to send less patrols out as the wall had regular forts or garrisons.
