I'm going to assume the two of you are not in the same location - if you are you could simply use a crossover cable or a hub with two standard CAT5 cables.
You can install and configure FTP onto your computer. There are some freeware FTP applications out there, just make sure you aren't getting the FTP Client software, you need the FTP Server software; your friend will need the client software to access your server.
Or you could simply configure your computer as a website (just a simple one - nothing elaborate) and provide links to the files you would like to give to him. The only thing about that is it is hard to set a username/password access on freeware web services.
I would stick with FTP.
The only other issue I can think of is if you are running a private home network - meaning you have your broadband modem aquiring your IP for you, yet you also use a router which NATs that IP into your private network. If you do have this setup, you will need to give the outside IP to your friend for him to use the FTP client software to point to, and you will need to either run DMZ temporarily on your router or set port forwarding for the FTP ports that are used (20 and 21 by default) on your router to allow your friend to get through your router.
Hope this helps.

If they are relatively small files just email, you can also use googlemail and leave info there to pick up later (It's useful for important file backups).
But the easiest is bung the files on disk and use a stamp. You can exchange files if you are talking on a messenger as well but many types of files do get blocked.

Well you can use GotomyPC, but that's not free. I believe if you download EMule or Morpheus, there's some option to set up a direct connection between friends.

If running Windows XP you should be able to use "Remote Desktop Connection. You could simply email a copy to him.

if you get a crossover cable you can join the 2 pc's like that
you can workgroup them together in a home network and do it like that
if you have a portable HD you friend can look at whats on your pc and copy what he likes to the portable HD then transfer from the HD to his PC
