My girlfriend's younger sister is 16, and she really wants a tattoo. Anyways my girlfriend was saying she thought that was maybe too young (as did I and apparently their parents) because her mom and dad sure said no. However, that just got me thinking... What do you think is a good age to allow a child to get a tattoo? I said 18, but what do you people think?

My girlfriend and I have one, but I am 21, and she is 20. We both got ours at age 20 - so obviously my girl just had hers a couple of months. I think that may be why her sister wants one too. Who knows though...

No CHILD should have a tattoo- besides that it is also illegal and no reputable tattooist would ever do it.

18 is the minimum age, so if she wants one at 18 then no one can do anything about it.

I got my first tattoo at 16- by 18 I had it covered with a different design. She will regret it, as I did.

Even now, I have 11 tattoos and I still occasionally regrets ome of them, and have even had some changed into different designs- these are ones that I was definately sure about!!

My mom let my sister get her 1st tattoo when she was 16. But as for me I think that the right age is maybe 18.

Tell her to wait until she's 18 or 21. Let her be old enough to get it so she'll understand what she's getting herself into and it's not only some doodling. I don't think anyone should get it at a young age like 16, they'll just end up regretting it.

I say normally 18.

But my nephew got one at 15. His father (my brother) died suddenly..and he designed his own tat in honor of his father...his mother let him get one to help him deal with his grief. Just a small tat on his right shoulder - to remind him his father is always there behind him. That was an exception though. They told her normally they would not do one on anybody under the age of 18 because (laws aside) you are still growing and can distort the tat as you grow.

My kids can get a tastful tattoo when they are mature enough to not get something stupid and a waste of money. I can't say a certain age but 16 sounds young. I don't think they will even tattoo anyone under 18? I'm not sure. I don't have one. Want one but I'm in my thirties. lol I can only say it depends on maturity level.

I would say that if you are of age to get a tattoo - then you can get one. Not before. It is like a right of passage. People who jumy "rights of passage" feel stupid for it later. A person at 16 doesn't really even know what they want - then they will be stuck with it later!
