i have checked the firewalls and it is fine..what else could be the problem?

Download avast.com and cc cleaner.com they will work ok for you but you will need to delete what you have got..

Open your firewall's list of Applications Allowed to the Internet, and make sure the new MSN Messenger isn't blocked.

If you're using some firewall program like Norton Internet Security of McAfee, it might not recognize the new version, and blocks it?

which version do you mean by 'old one'? cos windows messenger and msn messenger are different things altogether

Open Messenger, go to "Tools", then "Options", then "Connections".
This will at least tell you what the blockage is so hopefully you will know how to correct it.
