Elecctrons have negative charge and protons have a positive charge. When a stable atom loses an electron it loses a -(minus) so it becomes a positive ion. If it gains one it becomes a negative ion (it gained a minus).
Atoms always "want" to be stable so they tend to share electrons with other atoms to stabilise.

Each proton has one positive elementary electric charge, and each electron has one negative elementary electric charge.
