What made you think that it is only the common person who understood Martin Luther? The Catholic church excommunicated him because he found so many practices irrelevant to the teachings of the Bible and he knew from being one of them inside the Vatican, that during the early times of Christianity, Rome has made plenty of alterations in the Gospel and what they cannot change obviously, they created a church dogma that prevent people from asking further questions. What the church cannot answer, they made it a mystery that is reserve for God to answer only. The Doctrine of the Trinity was not there from the beginning of Christianity and ML knew about it. Martin Luther has dsicovered something within the Vatican that could have stopped the Church from growing but being influential and financially secure they are able to stay strong up to the present era.
