The name Cartaphilus (Carthaphilus or Kartaphilos) is who you are looking for. It is said that the man known as Joseph, the name he took on his conversion to Christianity, was the porter or gatekeeper of Pontius Pilate's courtrooms who had struck Jesus with his hand as he left the judgement hall, saying:

Get a move on, fellow.

Jesus looked up at him and replied:

I go quickly but you will wait until I return!

At the time of crucifixion, the one that pierced Him with his spear was Longinus, a kind man. He did this so Jesus's limbs would not have to be broken, which was the case if He were not dead already. This was considered compassionate.

He was struck many times. Before the High Priest and before Pilate. Neither of them are named, so not sure which verse you are talking about.
