It's when the sac that the baby is in ruptures and the amniotic fluid leaks or gushes out. Sometimes it happens naturally, and sometimes the doctor breaks the water when a woman is in labor to help move things along.
I see a couple of people have mentioned the mucuc plug coming out. This can happen weeks before the water breaks, so it's not necessarily a sign that a woman is in labor or that the water is about to break.

When your wife has a gush of water leak out from her. My water broke with my last daughter but never with the first 3. Prior to my water breaking I heard a sharp snap and then felt a "click" inside. The water is the amniotic fluid that surrounds and protects your child while in the womb. Sometimes it can slowly "leak" or sometimes its just a full "gush" it depends on how her labor is progressing. Good luck to you and congrats on the baby

When the "water" breaks: There is a "plug" holding the amniotic fluid which supports the baby in the womb once that "plug" comes loose from the contractions it is eliminated from the body and the "water breaks". In simple words the baby is ready to join the world.

There is a membrane lining your wife's uterus now. It is filled with fluid. It is a tough sac. As labor comes or during, contractions will make enough pressure to rupture this membrane. This fluid is called amniotic fluid. That is what is being described when one says their "water broke". The mucus plug has nothing to do with the amniotic membrane breaking.

Just prior to delivery, the "water breaks" releasing the amniotic fluids that surrounds the unborn baby. It is often a gush of clear fluid and usually happens at the most inopportune times.

Thats when the sack breaks and the amniotic fluid comes out. That is the fluid surrounding the baby keeping him/her safe from bumps n stuff. When she gets close to her due date she should not solely watch for this sign as it does not occur as the first sign in every labor. She should watch for loss of mucus plugg accompanied by contractions.
Good LUck

it is when your mucus plug...the pouch plug in front of your uterus entry to protect the infant and keep foreign objects and things out...this breaks and releases the watery fluid from around the baby...sometimes it's a big woosh of water and sometimes just a dribble it depends on the person!!!
