I LOVE IT! i would be making a lot more in a big company, but my life would not be my own.
If you can do it - you have a good idea, and are willing to work hard and do all the grunt work - go for it.
And depending on the business, you might make more money!
You depend on yourself, for bad or good.
Good luck.

As far as I'm concerned, absolutely everyone needs a home based business of some kind to generate extra income and give you tax breaks. Being self-employed can, but doesn't have to, take a while to build, but if you enter it with a plan in place, you can be receiving cheques by month 2 and work it full time without another job in less than 6 months.
Some take longer than that, it just depends on how bad you want it and what hours you are willing to dedicate to it.
You can earn far more income being self employed, as there is no cap on your salary. You are paid in direct proportion to the amount of work you do, which makes it very rewarding.
My daughters are 24 (mildly autistic) and 21, both work full time for income now, and are both involved in building home businesses so that they have the advantages that I never had when I was their age.
I teach people how to do this every day.

What were you thinking of getting into? I know of a guy who does home improvement work. His wife is working in a factory and if it weren't for her the bills wouldn't get paid. Stay with your job and start the business part-time and build it up. When the time is right THEN you can go full time on the business. When you get a chance look up the National association for the self employed. This outfit is geared towards the self employed person and has a monthly newsletter, and lots more.

Self Employed Individuals
provide their own training
complete tasks with no guidelines
invest in their own equipment and supplies
pay for their own travel expenses
are responsible for their own taxes, health insurance and retirement
make their services available to the public
can deduct numerous expenses from earnings
sell for the benefit of themselves
are paid when customers pay
Employees
receive training from the company
complete tasks following company guidelines
are provided equipment and supplies by the company
are reimbursed for travel expenses by the company
have taxes, health insurance and retirement provided/deducted from salary
make their services available only to the company
are limited in available tax deductions
sell for the benefit of the business
receive a steady paycheck
On a final note I am self employed and love it. It's really a personal decision but you can weigh the pros and cons.

Depends. You need to know your stuff to do it - no depending on anyone but you. You've got to have drive and vision - so you get up everyday and know where you are going.
It's a wonderful move and extremely satifying.
