........There are basically 3 types of survey. (1) A mortgage valuation. (2) A House buyers report and (3) A Full structural survey. The first one is the cheapest, around £175 -£200. The purpose usually with this one, is to confirm to the bank that the house actually exists. The second one, is an inspection by a surveyor to point out anything that may be wrong with the house, ie rotten windows, subsidence, electrics, plumbing, roofing etc.... Costing £600 ish Then there is the third type, the difference being that the surveyor will be a lot more thorough than the second type and will do actual tests of the plumbing and electrics. I personally would go for the third type, it may cost £1000 ish, but this is the most expensive purchase of your life. If anything is wrong with the house, you will be told and of course you can then go back to the seller and renegotiate the price of the house. Good luck

You want a Homebuyers' survey which will cost between about £500 and £750 depending on the surveyor, the area, and the age & size of the property.
You do not need a full structural survey unless the property is very old.or unusual or the homebuyers' survey recommends that you do the structural survey (in which case you can reasonably ask the vendor to pay for the 2nd survey).
It is definitely worth having a homebuyers' survey - I've bought 4 homes and each time the survey has been generally reassuring but also identified some important points. On one move, the survey identified that the roof would need replacing in the next five years and we got a reduction in the purchase price as a result.
The Royal Institue of Chartered Surveyors (www.rics.org.uk) provide guidance on all aspects of survey work and a directory of surveyors so that you can find accredited ones in your area.

I have recently had a homebuyers survey which was quite thorough and came with a good report highlighting serious defects ( subsidence and roof spread ) the cost of the survey was £275 and the offer on the property was reduced by £9000, which was accepted. Good luck

To have the lot surveyed is $300. I never heard of surveying the house.

depends where you are. I've sold a few properties, and always shop around. There should be 2 or 3 surveyors in your area, call and ask them all for a quote. If in London, be prepared for between £500-£1000.

Are you talking about the lot? I paid around $300 when I bought my house in the spring. If your talking about the actual home itself, the inpection for the bank was around 225-250 I believe.

Just go for the homebuyers survey. If there is any problem the bank simply won't lend you the money
