why do publishers make more than one edition of books?

Because sometimes there is new information that can be added and the Library of Congress does not allow the Publishers to keep the same ISBN if there is more than a certain percentage of new information in a book.

Also because there might be a snazzy new cover that may pertain to current events that the author/editor/publisher wants to promote.

New editions come out when an author or editor wants to either correct mistakes or add material to a book. Often this simply entails corrections of typographical errors and updates to the introduction.

New editions can also be published when an publishing house acquires the rights to a previously published book, when an illustrator adds pictures to a story, or even when a publisher wants to repackage a book to make it more desirable to book buyers.

When they add to or change the content, then a new edition is published. Also many publishers work out deals with book clubs to offer special prices to customers. Many book clubs will have their own edition (which may have a different cover jacket and foreword written for the readers). Much like video games, when a new edition comes out it encites a new excitement and will hopefully increase sales of that title.

Some books may have a dustcover with art on it, while another version might be published with a collector's deluxe leather cover with graphics. One edition may have color art in it, while another version might have black and white line drawings, and a third edition might have no graphics at all. There might be one with larger easy to read font and larger in format while another might have 10, 11, or 12 point font. The reasons are endless.
