It was about Jessie's girlfriend. Rick Springfield is singing that he wants the girlfriend that Jessie has. That's all I know. It's probably fictitious anyway beings that it was in a time where people were singing about anything to get their records to sell.

Springfield wrote this about a real situation. He was in love with a friend's girlfriend and couldn't do anything about it because they were both friends. He never revealed who Jessie or his girl really were. He considered giving her a copy of the song lyrics with a rose but chickened out.

My understanding is that Jessie was this guy he knew who had this girl who was everything to Jessie-and to him!
She was smart, beautiful, funny, outgouing, evrything he wanted in a girlfriend. but, everytime he would see any girls, they all did not compare to Jessie's girl and he would pine for someone just like her.
That is what the song is about in a nutshell.
