Fall is an excellent time. Rainfall is more reliable, there is no hot sun to stress them, and top growth goes dormant so all the energy goes into root growth which is what you want. Do NOT mulch heavily (roots need oxygen) and keep mulch away from the base of the tree to discourage insects. Water once a week right up to freeze-up and your tree will be established by spring!

Personallly, I like transplanting or planting trees in the fall about 3 months IN ADVANCE of the first freeze.. that gives the roots a chance to get established.. then that first year, make sure that the mulch is sufficient around the base of the tree

I have had the best luck planting trees in early fall. Right now is the best time. If you decide to do it, do it asap, as any later than the next week or two may be too late. You want the roots to become established before a hard freeze sets in.
