Several reasons. Waterloo looms large in the cultural memory. Also at one time we owned and reigned over large parts of France. We also burned Joan of Arc at the stake which does not help them like us. Football and Rugby bring out the worst i n the French because they do not seem to be good losers and the British like a good loser. The French are clever and probably more culturally inclined than us and so they despise us for that and of course they detest our cooking although we are making a comeback there. And of course there is always the memory of Vichy France at the time of WW2. Sad really

An old sore reminiscant from the olden days. The French were the only ones to succesfully invade Britain during the middle ages. Things have gone sour ever since. (boy those English sure do know how to hold a grudge)

Like too many others you generalize. I do not know anyone who hates the French. They have always been obstinate and extremely possessive. But that is their way. We do things differently. We seem to think that the way we do it is always right, so therefore the French must be bad.
The French attitude is very hard to understand. Very few of them slam and libel their President like the jerks on this website do. They know that it is a passing thing. Remember too, Chauvin came from France Chauvanism. He was French and only French. He did not hate his country, like my Grandparents from Marseilles, he loved his country.
Most importantly, to me, most of us Americans fear and hate what we do not understand.

Well, im English..its more a form of paranoid/jealous love. *shrugs*
*waits for the 'cheese-eating' comments*
I think alot of Americans have a seriously bad view of the French, for no reason other then its the new buzz-word/thang to do. Do any of you actually know French history? Do you understand how Frenchmen feel when you call their country pathetic for being consumed by the Nazis?
Its basically ignorance

Waterloo, 1940, and usually on account of the tabloidesque 'envy' concerning living in France, the beauty of the country, and the romantic skills of the people in question...us Brits are termed 'le Rosbifs', but far from the populist media, both nations admire and raise eyebrows at each other rather than the extreme method hinted by the populist media

A point well worth mentioning.
I think it is very cheap tactics used by unfunny comedians, and other people in the public eye.
Sorry - not just in the public eye, also people when they have few morals and are dying to add something to their otherwise failing conversation.
Also, France was a moral haven not too long ago, we are supposed to thing of morality as soppy.

The French are more sophisticated and liberal than Americans. Americans secretly hate the French because we really want to be like them, or at least this American does.
