Not everybody who is a successful professional by any means would fit the description of a Yuppie, and it would be a mistake to judge someone harshly based on taste in clothing or life-style alone. If you are simply critical of anybody who has reached some level of professional achievement, then you are likely just envious. But there is nevertheless something to using the term "yuppie" in a derogatory sense, and there is no shortage of individuals who display these associated personal qualities and attitudes and deservedly are disliked. True Yuppies are pretentious, typically think they are much better educated than in reality they are; they are scornful of people who work in regular jobs like the trades; they have a psychological need to diminish other people's value, abilities and intelligence; they judge others always by superficial observations; they are in reality very conventional; they are very conformist; they follow the herd; they point their fingers in the air to see which way the wind is blowing; they are sheepish and lack the capacity for independent thought; they often have been spoiled from day one and consequently are unsympathetic to the struggles, hardships and misfortunes of others. The male yuppie, when push comes to shove is emotionally and often physically a weakling - yuppies don't join the military. They are snobbish and condescending toward others. They men are frequently scorned by other men who are not Yuppies. The bottom line is that you can be a successful professional and be a regular person or you can be a snot. In the true Yuppie there are always considerable character flaws. For those who are irritated by yuppies, consolation can be found in the fact that because their lives have often been so charmed, when life ultimately gets tough, which it will sooner or later, , they fall apart and fully reveal their pathetic natures. I'm thankful I'm not a yuppie and pity anyone who is, especially the male yuppies.

I am a classic southern redneck, so I might be biased. In my experience, "Yuppies" value only those things they believe other people value. Like former President Bill Clinton, they are never what they appear. In fact, appearance is everything to them.
Give me the countryside, a shade tree, a swing, a grill, some steaks or hot dogs, and a beer, and I'm in Heaven.
You must give a yuppie a home worth at least a quarter mil, a maid, a cook, designer clothes, shoes, and watches, and a job with a title I can't even pronounce. Most of them are unlikely to be members of the local church, too; or like President Clinton, attend church, go home with a bible and his family, only to hide out the same day and commit a ......Well, you know the rest of the story.
I don't think you are a yuppie. Most of them are well-educated. Check your sentences and spelling.

Yuppies often carry a very smug demenor, and their actions and attitudes often imply they are only interested in trivial things, such as the type of car they drive, their apperance, their tennis or golf game, etc.
I'm a bit of a yuppie myself...but I can see why people would sneer at that. Its all just a difference in values and culture.
I agree and disagree with Kurt. Yups don't assume everyone has had equal opportunity...but they often DO assume that those who are unsuccessful have squandered what opportunity they had.

I guess other people feel envious, insecure or even threatened by the "Yuppies'" success.
It seems that people who aren't very successful or whom are stuck in the lower classes of society seem to fume and vent the most. I don't mean to sound classist but it seems true. The lower you are on the economic totem pole of society, the more dislike you have for the upper classes such as "yuppies".
However, I do agree with other posters here who say that "yuppies" have a smug and condescending attitude. I can see where "yuppies" who flaunt their newly earned wealth would tend to rub other classes of people the wrong way.
I don't know you or your friend, but part of your question says it all. He's unemployed and unable to find a job. Hence his frustration.

Yeah most of my friends are college educated as well, yet we dont have to be cheesy pretentious jerks like many yuppies in california are. To make phone calls i can still use a regualr cell hpone, i dont need to get a Palm Pilot or Blackberry to look cool and spend all my free lunch time on my cell phone pretending im making big business moves. To get from one location to another i can make it just fine in a honda or toyota, i dont need to go out and buy the typical cheeseball yuppy Audi A4 or BMW 325. They are just cheesy, they are still frat guys and sorority sisters but now they are in their late 20s and early 30s still being as cheesy and fake as ever.

Most are self-absorbed, spoiled humans who think they are superior to those who have had less opportunities than themselves. They often mistakenly believe that their successes are entirely a result of their own actions. Their tunnel vision isolates them from the real world and from real life, so they live in an illusion.
