Personally i think it is a joke. If Ortiz thinks he should win it he should pick up a mitt every now and then. His comments saying that a 40 homer 100 rbi guy should deserve it has been true but if you put numbers like that up you should play both sides of the field. After all Jeter will most like end up with atleast 100 rbi so give me your thoughts.

Also Ortiz forgets to mention the fact that he is protected by Manny Ramirez

To RedSoxFan, the reason you hear about the Yankees and Jeter is because unlike the Red Sox and Ortiz and Jeter said this, yankees are still playing for somthing. Ortiz is being selfish now and putting himself in front of the team.

Pete, the only stat Mauer has over Jeter is average and hes not even that much higher so how could you possibly say he has better stats?

2006-09-12 10:05:08 · update #3

Also Pete why dont you do the percentages of yankees assists to ortiz' putouts? i believe the percentages their are greater then 5 percent

It's hard to believe that Ortiz said that. He seems like the kind of guy that would take the high road and give Jeter credit for an MVP season. I don't see why he thinks hitting alot of HRs is the most important stat. The clincher, for me, is that .391 (1st) with runners in scoring position. SWEEEEEEEEET!!!!

I think the fans that downplay Jeter's value are the ones that only see him play against their team. I live in Boston, I watch about 66% Sox games and about 90% Yanks(MLB.TV). Ortiz is great but Jeter is better. I'll admit, with 2 outs in the ninth and needing a HR I'll take Ortiz. But in same situation, and needing just a hit, Jeter, Baby. Also, he's like 28 for 30 in SB and fans who think he's just an average fielder, don't have a clue. There may not have been a better captain on any team at any time. Jeter is the definition of "ballplayer".

I'm with Jeter, I really don't care about the MVP. I just want to see the Yanks win the WS. But players on teams that go to the playoffs get better consideration for the award. Also, contrary to what Georgie thinks, the votes for MVP are cast after the last day of the reg. season, so going deeper into the playoffs will have no affect on voting.

The bottom line is this: This question wasn't "Who should win the MVP"

It was "What do you think of what Ortiz said?"

I think it shows a selfish side of David Ortiz that we've never really seen before. Why does he even CARE about MVP after what his team's been through this year? He's got a teammate on the DL with Cancer... and he's arguing over who should win a trophy?

It also shows that Ortiz has a very limited knowledge of the history of the game.

Because for example... Phil Rizzuto won the MVP in 1950... with 7 homers and 66 RBIs.
In 1965 a guy named Zoilo Versalles won it with 19 homers and 77 RBIs.
During Ichiro's 2001 MVP year, he had 8 homers and 69 RBIs.

And who's to say how many runs Jeter would have driven in if he batted 3 or 4 in the lineup. Comparing the run-producing ability of a 2 hitter... to a 3 or 4 hitter is just moronic. Its like comparing a starter to a closer.

The question with regards to MVP is this....

How much would team x be impacted by the loss of player X.

What would happen to the Yankees without Derek Jeter? Would they be 10 1/2 up in the AL East? I doubt that seriously.

What would happen to the Red Sox without David Ortiz? Then again, where are they WITH him? Thats why losing teams rarely produce MVPs... because if you're bad, it doesn't really matter how much worse you might be without a guy.

Could the White Sox win without Jermaine Dye hitting 40 homers and driving in 120? I think so. They won the World Series last year when he only hit .274 with 31 homers and 86 RBIs.

Could the Twins win without Morneau? Well.. that depends on whether or not Santana or Liriano is pitching. They can't win (statistically speaking) unless Santana or Liriano are on the hill. If you could split the MVP between Santana and Liriano, they should win it.

However you can't, and each is of very similar value to the team.

Jeter gets it this year for lack of a better candidate... and because the writers are going to want to give it to him... out of respect for his body of work. There might never be a year as perfect as this one for a non-slugger to win it.

ortiz is great but jeter was the glue that held the yankees together with all the injuries and the a-rod slump. the yankees are going to win the division and ortiz was playing when boston lost 5 at home to the yankees. jeter is having a fantastic year at the plate and in the field!
my picks:
1. jeter-yankees
2. mauer-twins
3. morneau-twins
4. ortiz-red sox
5. santana-twins-probably the AL cy young winner
i like all the teams so i'm just a fan of MLB!
THIS ONE IS OBVIOUS!

And Stephen R must be a Sox fan...

It is a debate that the Sox and Yanks will argue back and forth and go no where...the important thing is that Jeter is focusing on the post season and getting his team there were is looks like Ortiz is out for himself at this point...Jeter plays every day in the field and Ortiz DH every day...Jeter steal more bases Ortiz hits more HR's...Ortiz has a lower batting average than Jeter but higher slugging...Jeter is protected by A-Rod and Giambi, Ortiz by Ramirez...

Like I said it could go on for ever

I was shocked to hear Ortiz' comments. I always thought of him as a class guy, but he changed my mind with this diatribe. Jeter is having an MVP type year period. Maybe the pressure has gotten to Big Papi and he just lost his cool. Regardless, Jeter is part of a team that is going to be very hard to bounce out of the playoffs this year. He is in the running for the MVP because his numbers justify it and the intangibles justify it. He is likely the frontrunner for the award and no one should be surprised or upset if he wins it.

Smells like "rotten apples" for what happen last year.....Ortiz should have won last year......MOST VALUE ABLE PLAYER is the title.....the winner should always answer the question....where would the team have been without him.......the Yankees last year got there with ARod but really think they could have gotten to the same place finish WITHOUT him......no way the Red Sox would have gotten where they did last year without "Papi"...he truly was the MVP last year......this year at this point in time it is in Jeter's favor..........Jim Rice won it in 1978!!!....they blew a 13 1/2 gave lead with him on the team.....he did nothing to keep them from losing that lead...where was the MVP season in that......Ron Guidry that year won 25 and lost 4....he should have been the MVP.........the media will or whoever votes on this decide it by the players numbers...for the record.....Mariano Rivera was the MVP on the Yankees last year..........back to the question......right now I vote Jeter.....sorry "Papi"

I think David Ortiz makes a lot of sense, but i do believe that Jeter has meant more to the Yankees this year than Ortiz has to any team, especially this year with some of the injuries the Yankees have had

Ortiz is fat and ugly and if he were really that good, he'd help his team pull its act together......Jeter on the other hand is good looking and performs under pressure, he is an awesome player and I think he may be conceited but who wouldnt be. Hes come along way and worked hard for it....he deserves all the glory. He is hot in more ways than baseball.........
Go yankees..........dont hate the player, hate the game !!

Well im a dodgers fan,so its not gonna be an bias opinion.
well ortis surprised me by bagging on his team-mates wow.
I agree with ortis where he say's he is more worthy of winning the mvp award, because of his power.4 instance look at the n.L. howard is favored right now because of his rbi's and HR.as 2 soriano, who is kind of like jeter, both have similar running stats, rbi's,and sorianos power makes up 4 the diference in avr.
although jeter does have good stats now that i look at them, ortis is also right about how jeter is able 2 get rbi's easy in that lineup.
Also on ur more details u said how ortis has manny 2 bac him up,yeah well jeter has a-rod,giambi,abreu and so-on.But hey jeter is doing the smart thing looking out 4 his team than eyeing the mvp award.

>>The only stat Mauer has over Jeter is average>>

Joe Mauer
BA-350 OB%-433 SLG-508 OPS-940

Derek Jeter
BA-346 OB%-419 SLG-492 OPS-911

Looks more like 4 for 4 to me....besides the fact that catcher is historically a more difficult position for hitters...There are 15 full time ML shortstops with BA over .280 , only 7 catchers are hitting better than .280 . That includes all players who have the minimum number of at bats to qualify...

Someone mentioned the fact that those of us who recognize Derek Jeter is not a good defensive shortstop "don't have a clue" well, Jeter's RF(range factor) of 4.14 this year ranks 23rd among full time ML shortstops...In the past 8 seasons Jeter has had an RF under 4.00 - 4 times...
