Because goods carried by ship are put down in the Cargo compartments. Also, planes have a cargo hold and certain items have to go there, including oversized dogs who are flying, and can't fit under the seat. When you ship UPS, they are called shipments when they are put on the trucks, but they may be flown in UPS planes in cargo.
