I think sometimes our parents are victims of "small-mindedness". They hear about big bad things like AIDS and in their minds giving blood is just one more chance of you getting it.
for the poster that said there is a potential for dying while giving blood, I would REALLY like to see the source on that with some numbers to back it up. Giving blood is a safe process if you're a healthy person. I work at a hospital and I give blood about 6 times a year for the last 15 years... I never died, not even once.
You should talk to your Mom and explain the benefits and how you are helping the world by doing this. Perhaps a call to the Red Cross or a trip to your local Blood Collection agency would help calm her fears.
Good Luck!

I gave blood in college and had to sign a waiver that said I understood it was possible to die giving blood. I don't think it has ever happened, but maybe that freaked her out. You also have to weight at least 110 pounds to give blood. My sister is 25 and still isn't allowed to. Or maybe she's had some bad experiences with it. My mom is paranoid about a lot of stuff, too.
Ask her about it. And remember that soon enough you'll be on your own, and you can make your own decisions about giving blood.

Maybe she's just worried about your health. She could be afraid someone might not wear the latex gloves or use a clean needle, so she feels she has to be there in order to safe guard her most precious treasure - you. (-: She may not want you to donate blood for the same reason. I'm sure the tests and the donations are done properly, but some people have extreme worries over certain things that don't bother the rest of us. This one must be your mothers.

She might be worried that you'll get infected with something. Maybe that's why she wants to be present when you have a blood test. You know, so she can make sure they use a new syringe. You should ask her.

You're going to have to ask your mom, I'm afraid. This sounds like an unreasonable fear she has, and you'll need to work it out with her, as calmly and reasonably as possible.
(And as for the "chance of dying" from donating blood, it's about the same as your "chance of dying" from getting out of bed in the morning. Sure, you COULD get hit by a truck on your way to school, you COULD choke on your Fruity Pebbles, and you COULD bleed out and die from donating blood... but frankly, of the three, my vote would be on the truck as the most likely.)

How old are you? You have to be 16 with parents approval or 17 and weigh at least 110 and be healthy. If you are younger than that and she says no, then you will have to wait.

Do you weigh 110 lbs or less? Thats the borderline, she may feel nervous about it. There may also be some kind of medical history she's concerned about. The only other thing I could think of is if her religion thinks that kind of stuff is unethical/unnatural.

Maybe she is scared. Some people still think you can catch things like HIV from blood donations but that is not true. Maybe you should ask Mom and educate her if she thinks like that.

it's nothing like that...I think your mom is worried that you will get some disease transmitted to you through someone elses blood or unclean needles that they might use. I know lots of people with that kind of paranoya.
