Objectively speaking, (and with the exception of Van Halen) what was the best hair metal band to come out of the movement? I'm kinda trying to find out more about the underground bands of the era that never hit mainstream yet created really good music.

If a band was so devoid of ideas that the only sub-genre they could make an impact in was "hair metal", then chances are they weren't very good.

Queensryche, Bang Tango, Tesla etc were all very good bands, but they were either never really "hair metal" band or else rapidly expanded beyond that label.

Enuff Z'nuff. They had 2 minor hits with "New Thing" and "Fly High Michelle". They've been described as a Beatles-esque type of hair metal. Plus, could you name another band (Van Halen, Bon Jovi excluded) that released 11 albums?
One of my favorites, in this genre or not.

Winger. I am not a fan of the style of music, but Winger is great. They are the best heavy metal from that era after Metalica of course. Especially liek the song "Spell I'm Under." Great lyrics in "Blind Revolution."

Manowar.

They were extra cheesy in the lyrics department but made some very good metal music, and they still sell very well overseas but never gained much popularity in the US.

Personally, I like Guns N Roses, but if you want someone who never really made it BIG, I would say Queensryche.

The Killer Dwarfs and Every Mother's Nightmare were pretty good.
