I've always known them to be the same terminology, but some people say there's a difference.

Stupid is not knowing enough, think of it more like judging quantity of intelligence.

Foolish is the ability to take what you know and make good decisions. Think of this as the Qualitative application of intelligence. Even smart people can be foolish.

Sementics... there is a very little difference between the two,

Stupid is a person who has a brain but he doesn't use it and thus does not act wisely.

Foolish is a person whose brain doesn't work properly, and he has no choice, thus, he acts unwisely.

An example will explain it.

G.W. Bush is stupid, he has a brain which he never uses. Instead of using his brain he uses that of Donald, Cheney and other neo-cons. American hegemony and its capture of the oil resources proves that at least he has a Brain, which loves America, but is not properly used to do the right things for America.

Tony Blair is foolish, his brain doesn't work properly, thats the reason why is he following Bush blindly. As his brain doesn't work properly he is doing nothing to help Brits but bringing troubles to home, like 7/7.

Stupid is actually a Bible word that means "not deserving of life"
Foolish is a word that means play the fool, or cheat. I guess in common usage a fool is someone who takes foolish ways to get things done...tries to do things in a way that most people would agree was impractical.

Foolish:

Seems kinda stupid, but I think it is foolish to ask this question...as they apparently are both the same sort of *dumb* thing!

stupid is when you know better, and you insist on doing the wrong thing, and foolish is a personality trait where stupid actions are repeated for the purpose of attention: a fool is only a fool if there are people who care about it.

Foolish can involve stupidity, but can also involve making a mistake. Stupidity is more exact.
