For home buying, http://www.primelocation.co.uk is a leading site.

To find out information on the services and environment in a particular local area, try the website for the local council - it will be in the form www.placename.gov.uk eg www.york.gov.uk or www.hackney.gov.uk.

For more tourist-oriented information, http://www.visitbritain.co.uk has lots of attractively-presented information.

And for facts & figures about different places, http://www.statistics.gov.uk/ has information by neighbourhood.

One way to find a place to live is to mark on a map all your key destinations (where friends and family live, where you work, the main travel routes you need access to, your favourite leisure places, etc) then draw lines linking each to each, like a spider's web. The centre of the web indicates a good place to look for somewhere to live. I used this technique when choosing an area of London to live and it worked for me!
