Why would somebody tell you that!!! I best thing to do is get them interested in the potty. There are lots of great books for kids. After lunch bring them straight to the potty just have them sit on it for a while. Even if nothing happens. It is good to get used to it. Reward them with a sticker to make it fun.
Just do not force them or you will make it an issue instead of an adventure. And it is okay for them to have accidents. Until the are even 4. Patience is the main ingredient to this.PS if it is a boy ( if possible) have dad help with the aiming thing.

No don't spank them. That is wrong. I saw the doctor today and he said to make a routine of it. Sit them on the potty at least 3 times a day. After breakfast, lunch and dinner. He said to leave them there for about 5 minutes at a time even if they don't do anything. He said you can start with them wearing there diaper. And if you do this everyday they should catch on.

I never had to spank my children when teaching potty training. I have a boy and a girl. "Praise" works better. Take them to the bathroom with you, when you go. Buy a "potty chair" that is their size...All they want to do is be "big like mommy and daddy" Don't stress over it and they won't stress out either. Good Luck!!

You can use positive rewards. Also the child can start early, but will not be trained until they want to. Also if they are in a Daycare setting, it can be easier as it is a thing of monkey see, monkey do... (not that kids are monkies)
Punishment is rarely a good training method.

why on earth would you spank a baby for not going on the potty? That is child abuse in my mind!

You may think I'm crazy, but if they are nude from the waist down, they can't hide it when they urinate. If the do it on the floor, just hand them a towel and gently tell them to clean it up and to use the toilet next time. You'll probably have to help a little with the cleaning, but they'll get the idea pretty quick.

not had kids yet but i assume the thinking is the same as dogs, positively reward them for doing as they should. simple.
kids dont know any better so why is there any need to hit them for "letting go"?
