You don't say what age group of people will be there. I also don't know what TYPE of scary you like. I wouldn't recommend many for young folks. Check the ratings if your party is young.

(1) WITH gore: Saw, Halloween (original), Friday the 13th (ditto), Nightmare on Elm Street (ditto again), The Ring (not so much gore), The Grudge, The Exorcism of Emily Rose, The Exorcist, Alien, Aliens, The Birds, Psycho (original), Black Sabbath (the band was named for this movie!), Dracula, The Fly, Frankenstein, Invasion of the Body Snatchers, War of the Worlds, The Hollow Man, The Abominable Dr. Phibes (Love Means Never Having To Say You're Ugly), Dawn of the Dead, Jaws, Poltergeist (yow!), Rosemary's Baby, The Shining (eek!), Underworld, Silent Hill, The Lost Boys, 28 days later, The Changeling, The Amityville Horror, Jacob's Ladder, The Haunting (1963 version),

(2) WITHOUT gore (aka Psychological Thrillers, my fave): Donnie Darko, The Mothman Prophecies, What Lies Beneath, The Sixth Sense, The Fly, Fright Night, The Machinist, Vertigo, The Dead Zone, Seven (had trouble placing this, it's a little gory), 12 Monkeys, The Jacket, Dark City, Vanilla Sky, The Wicker Man (also a little gory), The Blair Witch Project, Wolf, Red Eye,

(3) For the Young(er): Ghostbusters, Warlock, the Goonies, The Littlest Vampire, Hocus Pocus, Casper, Bedknobs and Broomsticks, Beetlejuice, The Addams Family, The Addams Family Values

(4) Funny Scary Movies: Young Frankenstein (fabulous!), Attack of the Killer Tomatoes (awful!), Shawn of the Dead, Tremors, Little Shop of Horrors, Creep Show, Ed Wood, Scary Movie, Arachnaphobia (unless you're afraid of spiders, then it goes into category ONE)

There's lots more. You can google... or you can ask your video store clerk for suggestions. Have fun!

I would have to recommend Jacob's Ladder. That movie is seriously really weird and creepy. I also like the following:

Devil's Rejects
Hostel
Silent Hill
Poltergeist
The original Texas Chainsaw Massacre
High Tension

I rent just about a new horror/scary movie each week. If you want a silly horror movie that is just sooooo bad, rent GingerDead Man. It's so cheesy

Scary movies are all very well, but people may have already seen them.

Why not try something different?

Go to Amazon or Play.com or the local Library and get a book on tape (Horror, of course).

Get everyone sitting down in the room, have some low lighting and play the CD.

You get the effect of an old fashion ghost story being told.

Depends on the age of your guests. As an adult, I love either the original or the remakes of Dawn of The Dead or Texas Chainsaw, but you can't go wrong with the original Halloween, Friday The 13th or Nightmare On Elm Street, or any of the Scream films. If your guests are underage, I'd go with more pg-13 films like Final Destination, there's plenty of them nowadays.

Gotta be Haloween, but preceeded by the Universal Classics; Dracula, The Wolfman and Frankenstein, with An American Werewolf in London another classic

Syriana...that movie sucks so bad that you'll scare the crap out of everybody if you make them believe they have to watch the whole thing.

Other ideas include anything with jennifer lopez in it, or jennifer aniston... Those would be pretty scary to sit through too.
