The dealer is asking a ridiculous price--I think they're trying to put one over on me. I can find a local guy to do the repairs and buy the parts---but I haven't been able to find info online that tells me "where" the sensor is actually located. Any auto guys have access to a drawing or steps to take to repair the sensor? Thanx!

Sorry-should have said "replace"-not "repair" I know that it needs replaced, but the local dealer wants almost $300 in labor to put in that little sensor--plus $215 for the part!

To test a knock sensor, tap on the engine while it is running. Tap on something like an engine hanger, nothing fragile. Use a small hammer. If the sensor is working correctly, the engine should slow down because the timing is being retarded. The sensor on the models I remember was screwed into the block, sort of like a big fat bolt, with a wire coming out of it. If the car is getting a code (check engine code) for the sensor, it might just be disconnected.

There are some Mazda only wrecking yards. You might be able to get the sensor through them. Check the Los Angeles phone book.

Your Millenia should be throwing a code for a bad Knock Sensor. I don t recall specifically what the code is, however. All the forums on the interwebs show that you have to remove the intake manifold to get to the Knock Sensor which is located in the top of the block between the fuel rails. I have replaced mine by removing the coolant crossover tubes, (make sure you replace the o-rings on the ends of the tubes). Its a lot easier than removing the manifold. You can then use a slotted socket, since there is a wire attached. I m a machinist, so I made one. Reach in using a long extension and, if memory serves, a universal joint. Most replacement Knock Sensors have two wires, where your Milly might use one. You can use the two wire sensor, disregard the other. It should be about $90.00.

Try going to Pep-Boys, Wal-Mart, Firestone, Goodyear, local fuel station, anywhere that has an automotive shop and ask them if they will replace knock sensor and how much for your car. Most knock sensors are located on side of engine but some can be very difficult to get to.

Never go to the dealer to get your car fixed they will always put one over on you because they charge top dollar to do the repairs and they use OEM factory parts that are expensive.

you should be able to pick up a repair book for that car. or you can just look behind the engine if their is any space it should be in the middle of the block.

You can not fix them as far as i know. Most knock sensors are located on the engine block, some are on the intake. Sorry I can't give spec. I don't work this type car.

on the milenia there are alot of parts that cannot be had after market- aka cheap. try going to a diffrent mazda dealership. for the most part you are stuck unless you can find a shop to do it as mazda is the only parts dealer.

knock could be from not putting in enough oil with the change. coolant leak cold be from a loose cap. I sure wouldn't drive it at all that way or you are going to do alot more damage to it
