had the same issue this year...Dcon baited poison traps...put 4 or 5 up there and check them every week or so to see if the bait has been eaten...if A LOT is gone, you have more than 1 mouse and may want to consult a professional...a mouse dying in your attic will not smell (they are mostly hair...not much meat)...if there was anything bigger up there, you would know it...a raccoon will sound like children running around in your attic...squirrels, the same.

Obviously you dont want it dying up there. (think stink) So you will want to trap it. It may actually be a squirrel, or a raccoon, as generally you wont hear mice or even rats in an attic.
Start with a rat trap, and use Reeses peanut butter cups. (Rats and mice actually hate cheese, and prefer chocolate and peanut butter). If the trap is sprung, but no critter, its probably not a mouse or rat. Next step is to use a large cage trap for squirrels and raccoons. Remember, after you catch it, dont release it near your house, or it will come back. Als, if it is a squirrel or raccoon, you will need to find where it entered and seal it up.

Use the mouse/rat bait. Distribute it all over your attic. The bait will cause the mice/rats to eat it and then usually leave the house to seek water and die outside the attic. You shouldn't have to pick up anything.

If you have a"Do-It-Yourself" pest control store nearby, you can buy "Red Fox Urine". It clears out anything in the attics. I own 11 houses and use it to run off the squirrels. It is a little costly, due the extraction process,(lol) but well worth the money. They have small containers with cotton balls inside that you can saturate with the urine and throw out into the attic!!! Works Great!!!!

Have you tried the sticky traps? Those work the best. Try putting cheese right in the center of the sticky trap. Also, don't use peanut butter, other mice/rats smell it and come in FOR it!
Hope you get rid of it soon!
